The real love story of many plots, destinations and possible fate.
Justyna originally from Poland, met Andrew from Wisconsin, USA in Edinburgh back in 2017 and they now live in Berlin, but they brought their wedding to the place when their adventure all started 🏴
We learnt during Father of the Groom speech that a family friend in fact predicted back in 2010 that Andrew one day, would find his wife in a far destination of Edinburgh, Scotland and clearly she wasn’t wrong 🤩
It looks like it was all meant to be, and we were honoured to help J&A celebrate their love in style infusing both cultures and many fun activities.
Starting with a welcome reception for guests arriving internationally at @coldtownhouse filled with pizza, Prosecco and fabulous craft beers. It all was followed by an elegant, yet fun spin on a wedding reception at the iconic @rcpevenue
THEME SONG - “Tyle Słońca w całym mieście” (meaning: “There’s so much sunshine in this city”) from Anna Jantar, processional song for our Bride.
Massive well done to a team of absolute superstars who made this all come together so beautifully, including our very own colleague Linda:

REAL WEDDING STORY - Emma & Struan
OMG we had so much fun coordinating Emma & Struan’s wedding yesterday at GG’s Yard 🤩
When we first met in April on our initial Zoom call consultation I knew already back then how well we’d work together 💛 Our couple just oozed kindness, but most importantly love for one another 🥰 It was sweet and infectious 😍 I mean just look at the joy on the girls’ faces as the dance around like nobody is watching for photos in the evening 👯♀️
We arrived on Wednesday to help with the setup and finishing touches, and then got up bright and early on Thursday to get the day off to a good start 🤩
GG’s Yard looked absolutely stunning and we even got quite a bit of sun through the day too.

REAL WEDDING STORY - David & Arnaud
History was made this weekend…
900th anniversary of @stgileshighkirk marked the first same sex marriage during a significant @prideedinburgh for our wonderful couple David & Arnaud celebrating their love in the spiritual presence of God, so important to both of them, something they couldn’t do in their homeland in France.
This is why our Grooms cared so much to celebrate their special event in a truly Scottish way as a thank you to the land that gave them this opportunity 🌈
When we first met on Zoom in November 2023 I knew just how much this meant to them and so we embarked on a journey to design a schedule of 3 events, showcasing the best of what Scotland has got to offer for their international crowd of guests.
On the first night we started with a welcome reception at @theneighbourhood.bruntsfield followed by a surprise secret drag event at @planetbarandkitchen
On Friday our couple pronounced their love in front of God at the capital’s infamous St Giles’ Cathedral. Followed by a Photoshoot on Calton Hill and reception at @virginhotelsedi -full of Ceilidh dancing from @grouseceilidhband into the little hours.
On Saturday @zakmoulaouiguery with @invisiblecitiestours led a city tour for our guests followed by exclusive takeover of @scotlandshop for a truly Scottish shopping experience and a real Fish & Chips extravaganza at @bertiesfishandchips including a whisky tasting from @88cask
Finally, our Grooms have decided to donate their wedding flowers to create 64 bouquets for Women’s Aid with the help of @zakmoulaouiguery and @invisibleedinburgh.

When we met last year S&C wanted a truly elegant, yet fun celebration for their guests travelling from around the globe and oh boy did we achieve this 🤩
Gosford House set the scene and everything else just followed suit for a truly memorable wedding!

REAL WEDDING STORY - Lia & Konain
The real love story of two university sweethearts celebrating their families and friends in the most epic way 💛
Starting with traditional Mehndi celebration on Friday and followed by a wedding day extravaganza on Saturday! What a weekend and simply the sweetest and kindest people on earth - it was a joy to help Lia & Konain to celebrate their special moments😍
When we met around a year ago L&K wanted to treat their guests to a very special celebration, initially thinking they’d want a castle but very quickly realising this wasn’t their vibe, so I brought them to Rosebery Steading and they immediately fell in love with the place. After a few creative consultations we landed on a theme for both Mehndi full of rich and traditional oranges, reds and yellows. For Saturday L&K wanted to still celebrate the richness of reds but also include sage green, blush pinks and whites. Tables decorated with cut glass glassware, gold cutlery, rustic place mats, complimented with scatter rose petals in the runners - GORGEOUS! All finished with a sharing family style catering full of Asian influences - DELICIOUS doesn’t describe it well enough!

Myths About Wedding Planners
Myths About Wedding Planners
Wedding planners are a valuable resource for couples who are planning their weddings. They can help with everything from finding the perfect venue to securing vendors to managing the budget. However, there are a number of myths about wedding planners that can deter couples from hiring one.
In the next few paragraphs, we’ll reveal the most common myths about wedding planners, so read on to find out more!
If we haven’t met before – my name is Oskar and I’m the face behind The Wedding Guru Oskar. I’m originally from Poland, but I’ve lived in my favourite place on earth - Edinburgh since 2008. I’ve been planning, running and delivering over 700 weddings since 2009 from as far as London in the south to the Isle of Skye in the north - castles, luxury hotels, barns, exclusive estates, you name it - I’ve done it all.
With me, you can feel confident that you will receive only the very best of service as certified by multiple industry awards including Your Scottish Wedding Awards and Great British Wedding Awards. And together, if you choose The Wedding Guru – Oskar, we will work to support Vow for Girls - because ending the international child marriage crisis, matters!
Myth #1: Wedding planners are expensive.
This is one of the most common myths about wedding planners. However, the truth is that the cost of hiring a wedding planner varies greatly. There are many affordable wedding planners available, and the cost of hiring one can often be offset by the savings you'll realize by not having to do all the planning yourself.
Myth #2: Wedding planners are only for big weddings.
Another common myth is that wedding planners are only for big weddings. However, this is not the case. Wedding planners can help couples of all sizes plan their weddings, no matter how big or small. I along with most other planners work with anything from two people elopements right up to large celebrations.
Myth #3: Wedding planners will take over your wedding.
This is a fear that many couples have. However, it's important to remember that wedding planners are there to help you, not take over. They will work with you to create a wedding that reflects your vision, and they will never try to force their own ideas on you. After all, your wedding should reflect your own dreams and desires.
Myth #4: You don't need a wedding planner if you have a Pinterest board.
Pinterest is a great resource for wedding inspiration, but it's not a substitute for a wedding planner. A wedding planner has the experience and expertise to help you bring your vision to life. They can also help you stay on budget and avoid making costly mistakes.
Myth #5: Wedding planners are all the same.
This is simply not true. There are many different types of wedding planners, each with their own unique style and approach. It's important to interview several wedding planners before you make a decision, so that you can find one who is a good fit for you and your wedding.
If you're thinking about hiring a wedding planner, don't let these myths deter you. Wedding planners can be a valuable asset to any couple who is planning their wedding. They can help you save time, money, and stress, and they can help you create a wedding that you'll never forget.
Here are some tips for finding a wedding planner:
Ask for recommendations from friends, family, or colleagues.
Interview several wedding planners before you make a decision.
Be clear about your budget and your vision for your wedding.
Make sure the wedding planner you choose is a good fit for your personality and style.
Here are some of the benefits of hiring a wedding planner:
They can help you save time and stress.
They can help you stay on budget.
They can help you find the best vendors.
They can help you coordinate all the details of your wedding.
They can provide you with peace of mind on your wedding day.
If you're thinking about hiring a wedding planner, I encourage you to do your research and find one who is a good fit for you. A wedding planner can be a valuable asset to any couple who is planning their wedding.
A Memorable Journey: Getting Married in Edinburgh
A Memorable Journey: Getting Married in Edinburgh
Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, is a city renowned for its historic charm, stunning landscapes, and romantic ambiance. If you're dreaming of saying "I do" in a fairytale-like setting, getting married in Edinburgh could be the perfect choice. In this blog, we'll guide you through the steps and share some tips to ensure your wedding in this enchanting city becomes a cherished memory for a lifetime.
Planning the Perfect Venue:
The first step to a memorable wedding in Edinburgh is choosing the right venue. The city offers a plethora of options, from majestic castles to elegant hotels and charming gardens. Explore iconic venues like Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Botanic Garden, or the historic Mansfield Traquair for a truly unique experience. It's important to book your desired venue well in advance to secure your preferred date.
Legal Requirements:
To get married in Edinburgh, you need to fulfill certain legal requirements. These include giving notice of marriage at least 29 days before the ceremony and providing the necessary documents, such as passports, birth certificates, and any divorce or death certificates if applicable. It's advisable to contact the local registrar's office or a wedding planner to ensure you have all the correct paperwork in order.
Hiring a Wedding Planner:
Engaging the services of a wedding planner can make the entire process smoother and less stressful. A local wedding planner who specializes in Edinburgh weddings will have in-depth knowledge of the best venues, vendors, and legal requirements. They can assist with everything from securing permits and arranging transportation to coordinating the finer details, ensuring your wedding day runs seamlessly.
Finding Local Vendors:
Edinburgh boasts a vibrant wedding industry, with a plethora of talented vendors to choose from. Seek recommendations and reviews to find trusted photographers, florists, caterers, and entertainers who can bring your vision to life. Collaborating with local vendors also allows you to infuse Scottish traditions and elements into your wedding, such as bagpipers, tartan accents, or a traditional ceilidh dance.
Accommodation and Guest Experience:
Edinburgh offers a wide range of accommodation options to suit every taste and budget. From luxurious hotels to cozy guesthouses and self-catering apartments, you can find something perfect for you and your guests. Consider the proximity of your chosen venue to accommodation options, making it easier for your guests to commute and explore the city during their stay.
Seizing the Scenic Opportunities:
One of the highlights of getting married in Edinburgh is the stunning scenery that serves as a backdrop for your special day. Take advantage of the city's historic architecture, lush gardens, and panoramic views by capturing timeless wedding photos at iconic locations like Arthur's Seat, Calton Hill, or the picturesque Dean Village. Hire a local photographer who knows the city well to ensure your photos capture the essence of Edinburgh's beauty.
Embracing Scottish Traditions:
Incorporating Scottish traditions into your wedding can add a touch of local flavor and cultural richness. Consider including elements like a traditional handfasting ceremony, a quaich (a two-handled drinking cup) for a unity toast, or a Scottish-inspired menu featuring local delicacies such as haggis, salmon, or shortbread. Your wedding planner or local vendors can help you infuse these customs seamlessly into your celebration.
Conclusion:
Getting married in Edinburgh is an extraordinary experience that combines the charm of a historic city with breathtaking landscapes and rich Scottish heritage. By planning ahead, adhering to legal requirements, and collaborating with local experts, you can create a wedding day that reflects your unique love story amidst the beauty and magic of this captivating city. From picturesque venues to renowned vendors, Edinburgh offers an unforgettable setting to start your journey of love and commitment.
HOW TO PLAN A WEDDING BUDGET
HOW TO PLAN A WEDDING BUDGET
Planning a wedding is an exciting time, but it can also be stressful, especially when it comes to budgeting. A wedding is one of the most significant events in someone's life, but it can also be one of the most expensive. To help you navigate the process, here are some tips for wedding budgeting.
DETERMINE YOUR PRIORITIES
The first step in wedding budgeting is determining your priorities. Sit down with your partner and make a list of the things that are most important to you. Do you want a large guest list, or would you rather splurge on the perfect venue? Once you know what is most important to you, you can allocate your budget accordingly.
SET A BUDGET
Once you have determined your priorities, it's time to set a budget. Be realistic about what you can afford, stick to it and track it. Determine how much you can spend on each aspect of the wedding, such as the venue, catering, flowers, and photography. It’s like buying a car – you’ll know exactly if you can afford an Aston Martin or a Smart Car, but equally as good for spinning the wheels, yet we do have an expectation of what we can afford, right?
CONSIDER ALL COSTS
When budgeting for your wedding, it's important to consider all the costs involved. This includes not just the big-ticket items like the venue and catering but also smaller costs like transportation, favours, and stationary.
BE OPEN TO ALTERNATIVES
There are always alternatives to the traditional wedding expenses that can help you save money. For example, instead of hosting a wedding on prime summer weekend, consider low season or mid-week dates – this is particularly popular way of saving on your budget when your guests need to travel to your wedding internationally anyway. Would you consider having a more plentiful evening buffet instead of having a wedding cake? And would you consider seasonal and locally grown flowers over a Pinterest board and out of season bunch?
GET CREATIVE
When it comes to wedding budgeting, creativity is key. Instead of splurging on expensive favours, you could make your own wedding favours and showcase your baking skills. Could you get your wedding party involved in some wedding DIY at a Bridal weekend or evening?
DON’T FORGET ABOUT HIDDEN COSTS
Finally, when budgeting for your wedding, don't forget about hidden costs. These could include security deposits, taxes, service charges, and gratuities. Be sure to read contracts carefully and ask vendors about any additional costs that may not be immediately apparent.
In conclusion, wedding budgeting can be overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. By prioritizing, setting a budget, considering all the costs, being open to alternatives, getting creative, and accounting for hidden costs, you can plan the wedding of your dreams while staying within your budget.

PLANNING
Derek Dunlop Photography and I have been working on this project since Spring this year and since then we’ve invited a portfolio of the best in the industry to elevate our vision.
At the last opportunity, I also pulled out my handfasting cord and we shot a few scenes featuring a Humanist Ceremony too.
Massive thanks go to my husband George from Edinburgh Wedding Directory for stepping in on the day to help us with the setup and the dressing of the kilts.

VENUE
In order to set the scene, the newest and hottest city wedding venue in Glasgow was selected – Haberdashery Glasgow fully developed and directed by friend duo Afton Ferguson & Nikki Fairfull. The venue was once a ladies’ tailor which operated for over 50 years in Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Street.
The scene was set and we moved around the venue as we tried to best capture each of the looks – from the beginning we wanted to work with a rustic venue and Haberdashery thanks to Dawn Stafford from Your Scottish Wedding magazine recommendation was the choice!
DM me “VENUE” if you’re unsure of your venue vision and would like some help venue hunting.

HAIR & MAKEUP
For hair and makeup, we were inspired by beautifully matching makeup and free flowing or pinned up hair styles. It was very important for us to ensure that hair and makeup connected closely with the looks presented.
We think that the fabulous team of two Sadias: makeup artist – Sadia Rashid and hair stylist – Sadia Chaudhry are absolute perfectionists and created the most amazing finishes.
The design of the looks has also been enhanced with henna application from incredibly talented Terij Kaur.
Sadia Rashid – Makeup Artist commented: “I am still in awe from the shoot we did – I was really impressed with everyone’s work and organisation, everyone gave their best. I can’t wait for us to reveal the final look!”

KILTS
Following my consultation with Anjali, I connected with the team at 8 Yards to tie the dresses with perfectly matching or balancing kilts.
The team jumped at the opportunity and decided to showcase some of their most contemporary collections and WOW how well they matched what we had planned already.
The fresh and exciting finishing touches in shoes, waistcoats, sporrans or even kilt hose really elevated the final looks.

Recently, I’ve been talking “Clever About Cash” with BBC Scotland hosts Eileen Adamson & Kim McAllister!
Interestingly, I am often being asked why couples might consider a Wedding Planner when undertaking one of the first and biggest financial projects of their life involving many moving elements and opinions.
Apart from the obvious benefits of having an expert full of first-hand knowledge and experience at your disposal, we’re also often called ‘budget warriors’ and if you choose to work with a wedding planner, we will not only ensure you stay within your budget, but also ensure your £££ work that little bit harder for you.
Additionally, considering the network of industry connections, we have the ability to negotiate preferential rates for your benefit, which often means you recover some or even all of your costs and have your ‘best wedding friend’ by your side every step of the way.
Would you consider a Wedding Planner to help you manage your wedding budget? Let me know in the comments below.

Ahead of my interview for the BBC, I made sure to prepare a few notes on how you can be clever about your wedding spend and here are a few of them you might want to consider before you start your budget planning.
Firstly, are you set on a date, or would you consider flexibility - if this was to have a big impact on your venue hire cost? Expectedly, we’re experiencing high volumes of weddings in 2022, but this also means that you’re more likely than ever before to get invites for out-of-summer season or even mid-week dates and this can have a significant impact on wedding cost, so maybe it pays to be flexible – see what I did there?
Did you know that if you were to consider a winter date, that isn’t Christmas or New Year and falls mid-week, you might save more than half of venue cost in comparison with a Saturday in July – how attractive does that sound, let me know in the comments?

Weddings are becoming a lot more intimate celebrations – so would you consider downsizing your party? With an average wedding seat costing upwards of £200, would you be willing to treat everyone on your guest list to a meal of this cost otherwise?
If it’s your family who are contributing to the cost of the wedding and calling some shots on the guestlist, you might want to be considerate of their involvement too, yet if you’re feeling frustrated or decision-making becoming too hijacked – relate to their feelings and express why you would prefer to make some of the decisions yourself.
Let us know what you think in the comments below.

You also don’t want to fall a victim to additional costs – it’s great if you can pull off a beautiful DIY wedding, but consider all elements carefully and if you’re new to the concept, ask for advice from the experts or somebody who has planned a fully DIY wedding before (but focus on facts – rather than opinions) as you don’t want to fall into a trap of additional hire costs, licenses, facilities such as running water, catering, sufficient electricity facilities, WCs, staging, delivery charges, fire safety, VAT, etc.
How worried are you about additional costs when planning for a wedding? Let me know in the comments below.

Ensure you understand each offer and can easily compare them, especially when it comes to the venue and catering (statistically the biggest price items in your budget) – dry hire and all-inclusive offers can have a big impact on your wedding budget. This is especially true if you’re hiring a venue on exclusive use basis – you will need to be mindful that exclusive-use venues carry a higher cost to run, so if price-tag is important to you, you might want to consider hotels and all-inclusive packages.
Would you know how to compare all venue offers? Message me in the Chat Box today and I can send you a link to one of my templates.

Catering can also have a big impact on your wedding spend – so would you consider alternative and creative catering or set menu option? Worry not, whatever option you go for all your guests with dietary requirements must be catered in accordance with the latest legislation, for as long as your caterer is notified in advance. You might have also noticed already that there are often additional charges for choice menus, additionally three-course plated dining might not fit your celebration – would you consider a variety of artisan caterers, vans and grazing stations? If you consider your options carefully, your per guest spend might decrease accordingly – something worth considering and discussing with your venue as they might have their own safety policies in place.
Which would you go for? Comment below:
A. Plated set (one option) menu
B. Plated choice menu
C. Alternative => BBQ / Buffet / Grazing station

According to Forbes pre-loved wedding dress searches online have increased by 103% since March of this year and this is where a lot of your savings could happen too, but be careful before purchasing, because you do not want to spend as much in alterations as you’ve saved by purchasing a second-hand dress. This trend is also becoming a lot more popular amongst celebrities - Princess Beatrice wore a vintage dress on loan from the Queen’s collection for her wedding in 2020 and Carrie Symonds opted for a dress from My Wardrobe HQ where you can rent dresses from as little at £25 – now, how’s that for a saving? And how sustainable is this slow-fashion too?
Give me ❤️ if you love the idea of pre-loved wedding fashion in the comments below.

Finally, my favourite topic – wedding floristry! There’s so much you can do about your choice of wedding flowers that can impact your pocket! Firstly, seasonal flowers are always a lot more effective, and you get more for your money, so be careful before you hit those Pinterest boards full of Spring flowers for your Autumn wedding! Secondly, silk flowers have exploded here in the UK and they are better quality than ever before. Not only that – you can avoid unwanted allergies at your wedding and be more suitable by hiring, and this is likely to save you a few pennies too. Or simply be creative – some artificial to provide a structure, with fresh flowers filling it up to add value, now that’s an impressive use of your budget!
Which is your personal favourite? Comment below:
A. Fresh flowers
B. Silk flowers
C. Mixed fresh and silk for the impact

All in all, my biggest piece of advice is that booking things sooner rather than later could also be a solution for avoiding the current price increases. And please be careful – if what you’re looking for seems too cheap to be true, it probably is! Ensure you work with recommended and reputable suppliers only, check them out online, their reviews and track record and use a credit card for payments where possible for additional safety cover.

1. Paying for the wedding – how do I navigate this when my parents are apart e.g. I’m not close to my dad but he’s still paying, and my mum isn’t happy about it?
Not delving too much into the psychology of human relationships, some people simply show their appreciation and love through gifts and this could be what’s happening here.
Secondly, weddings aren’t cheap - let’s be honest about it and if Dad wants to make this generous gesture and the couple is willing to accept it and appreciate it, then why not!
My advice here would be not to bicker with Mum, but rather arrange for a heart-to-heart conversation and explain your motivations and reasons. Open up and allow your Mum in on your plan and explain what her support would mean to you, if that doesn’t work, put her in your shoes - how did it make her feel when she planned her wedding and others were pushing ideas, traditions and guilt on her - very quickly you should see the change of tone and all she will care about is that you’re happy and your day is just perfect for you.

2. Stationery – what are the options for wording invitations if it’s a non-traditional family situation to avoid unwanted attendees?
Addressing each and every individual invitation directly to the invited person is one of the options
Arranging a seating plan in a way that conflicting members of the family don’t come into contact unnecessarily, same applies to ceremony seating - this might need to be arranged and sign posted on the allocated seats - ideally for everyone so that you’re not singling anyone out and upsetting them
Using electronic RSVP services which limit responses to one per submission and personalised links is another way of avoiding unwanted attendees or plus ones you can’t have or want to have at your wedding

3. Stepmother issues
I love my mum and my stepmother but they don’t see eye-to-eye. Is it possible to include both in the dress shopping process?
Why not arrange two dress shopping trips and make a day out of it to treat them both - the last thing you want is for their conflict or mood to affect your experience
I have a rather flamboyant stepmother and I’m worried about her upstaging my lovely mum’s outfit on the big day. How can I get around this without offending?
Why don’t you take them shopping and outline what design and colour theme you’re hoping for - the more expectations you can outline to them, the fewer chances of upsetting them or feeling disappointed yourself you will have
If shopping together or on two separate trips is not an option - why don’t you make suggestions to them both or ask them what they have considered wearing and give them your honest feedback of how it ties in the overall design of your special day
The morning prep – I’m closer with my stepmother but feel I should have my mum get ready with me. What’s the answer?
No matter what - you do not want to remember your wedding for the things you haven’t done and feel disappointed or guilty. Why don’t you allocate roles for both Mums that you know they can fulfil together or separately and you know they would feel appreciated and make your experience more enjoyable

4. The ceremony
Who walks in and out with whom?
You don’t need to stick to tradition if you don’t feel like it’s you!
There are so many elements to ceremonies, especially in Scotland where you can get married as and where you want to so that you can involve all or just some of your family members in many symbolic elements, so choose wisely what you believe they can best contribute to.
Would Dad be more comfortable with setting up drinking from quaich, Mum walk you down the aisle, Stepmom doing a reading, Stepdad handing over the rings - really the choice and creativity is yours to have here
Our family split means there are effectively three sides… But only two sides in the room to sit on! How do we arrange seating to keep it conflict-free?
Why not have two aisles? My husband and I had our Mums walking us down the aisle simultaneously, but I’ve had the Groom walking in with his Mum and the Bride walking in with her Dad before - honestly, you don’t need to be traditional :)
Alternatively, you can allocate seats for the first few rows so that you know they won’t cause issues
My dad will be attending the wedding but I don’t want him to walk me down the aisle. How do I break it to him, and who should I choose instead? Or could I walk alone?
I think what you need to do first is make a decision about how the processional entrance will look like and who, if anyone at all will be walking with you down the aisle
Then, when you’ve made that choice, explain your motivations behind this choice to your Dad
Over the years, I’ve had Grooms awaiting their Brides at the bottom of the aisle to walk in together, I’ve had Brides walking down alone with an entourage ahead of them, and I’ve also had both parents walking the Bride or the couple’s children walking with their Mum - don’t feel pressured into this decision as it is an emotional element of the ceremony and you want to feel like you’re getting the right support for you

5. Photographs – how best can we keep things under control during the formal photos whilst still getting the family shots I’ve dreamed of?
Do your homework and prepare a detailed shoot list and allocate responsible people to help you organise them on the day - remember, this is not the photographer’s job as they will not know your family and the politics!
If you want to keep conflicting families separated - choose different locations for each group you want photos taken with

6. Table plans – how do I make it work?!
Not just the issue of mum and dad potentially both being on the top table, what about their partners?
Having them host tables at the front of the top table can be fun especially if they all get on
If there is a clear conflict - you might want to ask both sides about their expectations and how your plan would make them feel - it’s all about compromise here
What if one has a partner and the other doesn’t?
Consult the other side on how the seating of the partner would make them feel
Having them at opposite ends of the table could also be a solution
And what about family members invested in this conflict – how can I keep the regular tables fight-free?
This comes down to the art of arranging the tables in your room
It will take quite a bit of moving and shaking things up to ensure it works and while you’re keeping the wedding war-zone-free, you’re not upsetting anyone by putting them in the back end corner
Do it visually - ask venue for a sample table plan, use colour coded post-it tabs and group guests by colours and then start placing tabs around the tables on the sample floor plan to see how it flows - having it visually in front of you, can make it a lot easier - do you remember Monica’s flags table plan from Friends? This is a simplified version :)

7. Speeches with split families – what’s the etiquette and to what extent does it depend on my personal preference? Is it more important to go with what I want – or to not offend those who are potentially funding the wedding?
If you’ve got certain family members involved in financing the wedding, be conscious and mindful of their involvement, you don’t want to upset them
Traditionally, it’s three speeches of up to 8 minutes each - Father of Bride, Groom, Best Man
Speaking from experience - the fewer speeches, the better - so that’s something that might help you in justifying your decision, you do not want your speeches to go on for longer than 30 minutes in total
Some people are more comfortable with public speaking, so there’s no point in forcing your shy Dad to do a speech just because. Your Dad might be more comfortable with walking you down the aisle and Stepdad with a speech
Alternatively, if the parents’ situation is too complicated - why not ask your sibling to do ‘the family’ part?

8. Any words of wisdom and advice that I can give to my warring family members as a ‘gentle warning’ to behave themselves ahead of the big day? Or should I be laying the law more seriously?
If you strongly foresee things easily getting out of hand at the wedding, you might want to consider hiring security to help you handle the situation and make your family aware of it
If taking such serious measures isn’t on the cards - ensure to allocate ‘conflict mediators’ in advance so that you’re not being pulled into uncomfortable situations on your wedding day

9. What about me – any advice on staying calm when I’m conscious that World War 3 could break out at any minute?
The more planning, open and honest conversations and precautionary measures you can put in place in advance of the wedding the better
Having a solid plan will make you feel more prepared and aware, and therefore worry and stress about it all less

10. How to communicate a children-free wedding?
Let your guests know from the get-go – on your Save the Dates so that your guests can make arrangements
Be clear and consistent if only family children are coming
Explain budget or space limitations
If for any reason you receive an RSVP with children on it, don’t react on emotion, relax and phone them, over the phone conversations will deflate the emotions

HOW TO STAY SANE WHILE WEDDING PLANNING?
HOW TO STAY SANE WHILE WEDDING PLANNING?
Recently, I have been tasked by the wonderful Beth from Tie the Knot Scotland Magazine to join her on stage of The Scottish Wedding Show in Glasgow on 19th and 20th February which attracted a whopping 9,719 attendees over the two days and answer some of the trickier wedding planning questions in an interview.
In today’s blog, I share with you the questions posed to me during the interview and the answers I have given to help you navigate your way around the challenges of wedding planning especially when family politics, traditions and the topic of money comes into play.
Want to find out more? You’ll need to check out the below paragraphs.
Blog by OSKAR GILCHRIST-GRODNICKI
If we haven’t met before - I’m Oskar and I’ve been involved in the wedding industry since 2009!
After 13+ years in the industry, I have run, delivered and planned over 600 weddings in my career and received 5 industry awards for excellence in my work.
Nowadays, I plan weddings in Scotland, UK, conduct legally-binding Humanist ceremonies, consult and coach wedding businesses internationally and in my spare time, I blog about all things weddings and feature as an industry speaker.
Most recently, I also partner with my husband George behind Edinburgh Wedding Directory - simply because we’re married to the job too! :)
Hit the chatbox option if you would like to talk some more today!
1. How to ask for wedding finance support from your family?
You don’t want to seem rude or ungrateful, so do your research, set a budget and then ask parents if they would be willing to contribute to it.
Not sure how to set a budget - chatbox messages me today! I have some templates for you!
2. How to involve your family in wedding planning and avoid misunderstandings? Including allocating roles in bridal party etc. and how to avoid disappointment e.g. if a would-be ‘bridesmaid’ doesn’t end up getting asked to be one?
Sit down and decide how many members of the wedding party you would ideally like to have, not just aspiration but realistic budget for outfits, hair and makeup, cars, accommodation, etc.
Additionally, having too many people involved can also carry its challenges – it is definitely something to be mindful of.
If you foresee some of the guests getting disappointed for not being given the Bridesmaid title, Best Man, etc. consider involving them in other parts of the day that won’t have as much impact on your plan such as ushering to ceremony seats, ceremony symbolic gestures, readings, reading out cards as part of the speeches, doing MC-ing duties for speeches, announcements and cake cutting/first dance.
Secondly, don’t assume everyone has the same ideas or expectations. Again, do your research, set a vision, mood-boards, budgets and outline what you’re hoping for in your wedding plan. Then communicate your vision, plans and choices to those who want to help you and assign specific roles if you want to avoid disappointment.
Would you have handled this otherwise, let us know in the comments below.
3. How to communicate children-free wedding?
Let your guests know from the get-go including Save the Dates, so that your guests can make alternative arrangements early.
Don’t beat about the bush and be consistent if only family children are coming,
If budget, space or limited changing facilities come into play, be honest about these, your guests will appreciate knowing this in advance.
Nevertheless, if for any reason you still receive an RSVP with children on it, don’t act on emotion, relax and phone them, over the phone conversations will deflate the emotions.
What’s your opinion children at weddings or not? Let me know in the comments below.
4. How to request cash instead of presents?
Using cash registry website can help you with that and be specific why you’re asking for cash and how you’re going to use it - honeymoon, house deposit, house improvements, etc.
Example: “The most important thing to us is that you are able to celebrate with us on our wedding day. However, if you wish to give a gift, we will gratefully accept a small contribution towards our honeymoon.”
Example: “We are extremely lucky to have love, laughter and house full of furniture, so if you'd like to help us celebrate with a gift, we've set up a honeymoon fund at…”
Now that’s a hot topic - how would you approach it? Chatbox message me today if you’re still not sure how to go about it!
5. How to tell someone who expected an invitation that they are not invited i.e. plus one’s?
My advice is not to put it off and thank them for reaching out and offer them honestly – whether that’s budget constraint, venue size, keeping the wedding to absolute minimum as funding the wedding yourselves – they’ll appreciate your honesty and appreciate your instant response.
On the other hand, if it’s a distant family member, speak to your parents, they might be able to help defuse the situation.
Will you be inviting plus one’s? Let us know in the comments below.
6. How to approach doing the wedding seating plan? E.g. family politics/divorced relatives at play etc.
Do it visually and don’t leave it off!
Statistically, your numbers will only drop by a maximum of 10% (give or take) from your initial guest list to RSVPs, so why would you hold off until the last minute when you’ll have so much more to work out and confirm in the final months before the wedding?
Ask your venue for samples of table layout in the room and have these printed on large paper or simply use A4 sheet per table in that same layout.
Colour coordinated tabs will help you to organise your guests into groups - top table / immediate family / distant family / friends / colleagues, etc. and play about with it, there are no wrong answers!
Having it laid out visually in front of you, will make it real and a lot easier to navigate as you can always peel and move the tabs as necessary.
Are you going to wait with your table planning until RSVPs - knowing how much planning goes into it? Give me Y for Yes and N for No in the comments.
7. How to avoid clashing over traditions with family?
Always relate back to their experience of wedding planning! Ask them how it made them feel when traditions were being forced on them while wedding planning! You’ll see the change instantly!
On the other hand, if your family are contributing to the wedding, remember to be empathetic and open to compromise, yet remind them politely that this is your wedding and why you believe so strongly about something.
Have you ever felt pressured to follow traditions? Chatbox messages me today if you need help navigating this sensitive subject.
8. How to avoid others influencing your decision?
Set boundaries from the beginning and explain your expectations and why it is so important to you!
Again, don’t act on emotion and be sympathetic, for example: “I’ve dreamed of this day my entire life and there are certain things I really want to do myself.”
Another example: “I appreciate everything you are doing, and what would really be helpful is if you took care of this thing. The rest is something that I want to do.”
Would you now assign specific and defined roles to your wedding party to avoid disappointment? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
9. How to compromise with your significant other half on the big decisions?
Ensure you take time to research your expectations before you start making decisions and lay them out to one another.
Creating a common wedding email address will help you to ensure you both have got the access to it and can be involved in all conversations.
If you start feeling heated about something, step back from it and review later. Don’t ever make rushed decision on an emotion! Setting “wedmin” days/times when all you do is concentrate on wedding decision making, will help you be more focused and less frantic, therefore distracted.
Finally, why not celebrate big decisions with a drink you both enjoy – wouldn’t that be lovely? Wedding planning has its challenges, so why not treat each other in the process for the challenges you overcome together!
Have you had any other ideas on how to come to an agreement when wedding planning? Let us know in the comments.

GROOM STYLING BY SCOTLANDSHOP
GROOM STYLING BY SCOTLANDSHOP
You might have seen the amazing wedding day fashion ScotlandShop offers in its range including the wonderfully warm and fantastic looking scarfs, wraps and shawls they suppliers for our Spring photoshoot.
This time, however, our expert fashion advisor Monja Heron from ScotlandShop introduces us to the newest trends in Men’s Fashion!
THE MOST IMPORTANT DAY
Choosing a wedding dress may be the most important clothing decision a woman will ever make, but let's not forget that this is also the most important day of the Groom's life! There are many options for the groom from a kilt to a suit or tails - and that’s before you even start to look at tartans and tweeds - says Monja!
In Scotland, traditionally men will wear their family tartan or a tartan of significance to them, such as their district or regimental tartan. However, today many Grooms are selecting tartans to fit within a theme to match in with bridesmaid dresses, stationary and a whole host of other elements. We have a round up of our top 2022 colour and style picks to help inspire your wedding day outfit!
The most obvious and traditional choice for a Scottish wedding is the kilt. Despite being worn by many men to many different occasions, the kilt outfit can look very different depending how it is styled – from the very traditional complete with ancestral links, to the modern and fashion-forward! The kilt itself can be worn in a family tartan to represent your Scottish heritage, or it can be made in a more contemporary tartan to suit the region you met your partner, or in a colour to match the venue or colour scheme. The options are endless!
THE KILTS AND TARTANS
To fit with one of 2022’s most popular wedding colour schemes of ‘throwback brights’, choose a recently designed Hebridean tartan with bold accent colours such as ‘Leaping Salmon’. The bold kilt tartan can be complimented with a beautiful blue tweed kilt jacket, and brighter accessories. Matching the golden yellow or the weathered red stripes in the tartan with your flashes and tie will add a fun pop of colour, while experimenting with different leather colours for a pair of tartan ghillie brogues will make your look truly unique. A modern artisan sporran with brown fur will complement the tartan and finish off your kilt outfit!
HOW ABOUT A SUIT?
If a suit is more your style, a tailored three-piece will always be a classic option for your wedding day. To update this timeless look, go for a tweed jacket and trousers in a slim fit style, and pair with a double-breasted waistcoat in a contemporary tweed-tartan. A navy-blue colour scheme will suit most venues and has the added benefit of being easy to match for flowers and wedding décor! For a modern summer wedding, opt for a brighter complementary colour for the waistcoat such as Cairngorm Holyrood. The warm browns and yellows throughout the Holyrood tweed-tartan pair beautifully with copper or rose gold touches which you can introduce into a tie pin, wedding bands, or even your embroidered wedding date in the jacket’s lining! To keep the suit cohesive despite using two different fabric colours, choose the same buttons and linings throughout the look, and add a matching Cairngorm Holyrood tie and cufflinks. Finish your outfit with a pair of simple brown dress shoes or brogues.
OR BLACK TIE DRESS CODE?
If you are planning a more formal wedding with a black-tie dress code after a long period of lockdowns and cancelled parties, a statement dinner jacket is a way to go! This will immediately differentiate yourself from your best men and guests while keeping to the formalwear theme. A dark green tartan dinner jacket with black stain lapel detailing will remain timeless no matter how many years later you look at your photographs. Choosing a tartan such as Black Watch Modern will create a subtle look and is easily worn with simple black dress trousers and a black satin bow tie for understated sophistication. Match your groomsmen’s bow ties to your tartan jacket and throughout your venue décor to link the wedding theme together.
Hopefully now you are feeling inspired to bring a little 2022 colour and style to your big day. If you need any help then you know where we are, on hand with swatch books and ideas for colour matching and a vast knowledge of all the hundreds of tartans available. We look forward to helping you create the wedding you have always dreamt of.

TOP 10 MOST POPULAR WEDDING TRENDS IN 2022
TOP 10 MOST POPULAR WEDDING TRENDS IN 2022
2022 will bring the busiest wedding season in history and with that a lot is at the stake to make sure your wedding is as unique and as “you” as possible!
Do you know what it takes to make your wedding a stand-out event of 2022? Check out some of my most popularly observed trends for 2022 in my blog below!
Quirky and unique venues
All-inclusive corporate wedding venues are still at the height of their popularity due to their all-round hassle-free offer; however, we’re seeing a big move towards more urban/post-industrial, rustic or unusual venue choices amongst wedding planning couples.
I now work with couples who will not consider a hotel – period! Couples more often now than ever before are keen to break with tradition and offer their guests a stand-out once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Exclusivity is also often a priority, no matter how large or small the wedding is! As such I am observing more micro-wedding exclusive-use wedding venues appearing in my searches!
Are you currently considering a quirky wedding venue? Chatbox message me today for some inspiration and recommendations!
Micro-weddings
Micro-weddings and romantic elopements will continue to be a popular choice for many couples!
After nearly two years of the travel ban, more and more couples are eager to experience something new and exotic and while they’re at it, get married at the same time!
This is either the couple alone or with their immediate family and witnesses – a holiday and a wedding celebration at the same time.
If you’re looking for some of those scenic and romantic destinations in Scotland, book a FREE 15-minute discovery consultation today!
First-look photos
This is a very popular trend across the big water already, however, if I was to ask a couple about this in the UK a few years ago, nobody would consider this seriously – it almost seemed like a no-go taboo topic.
Nowadays as attitudes change, I am more often being asked about first-look or pre-ceremony photoshoots and the logistics of that.
In order to accommodate for something like this, we need to ensure that it happens at a time or place where your other guests can’t see you – this is to ensure we can still offer them the ceremony reveal moment, but also giving you enough time for romantic and intimate photography.
Some couples choose to do their wedding day photoshoot pre-ceremony to shorten the time it takes between the ceremony the meal to accommodate for all photoshoot moments. This also means you can start your ceremony later.
Have you considered this option for your wedding? Give me Y for YES or N for NO in the comments below– let’s see what everyone’s consensus on this is.
Bride’s speech / Maid of Honour Speech
Something that is a popular custom in the Scandinavian countries is only now becoming a trend in the UK!
It is not only interesting, but the division between gender roles in weddings are finally changing, which is a change that is very much welcome and embraced amongst the couples and their guests!
To be honest, I never fully understood why you would choose an incredibly uncomfortable with public speaking Groom or knowingly choose an incredibly inappropriate Best Man to perform a speech when you could ask a lot more comfortable and confident female counterparts for the role?
What are your thoughts on the matter? Let me know in the comments below.
Drinks Reception Entertainment
A bit of background music in the time you’re away for your post-ceremony photoshoot is no longer the only aspiration for wedding couples and their guests!
Drinks receptions are now a lot more activity-based – be it a quiz, outdoor games, bouncy castles, face painting – you name it.
Some photoshoots can take up to 2 hours and your guests are looking for things to do – if you fill this time with activity-based and fun things to do, your guests will not even know where the time has gone, but if you leave them with a glass of fizz for two hours and nothing to do, it feels like hours and they’ll instantly start looking for somewhere to sit, they’ll be cheeky peeking into your big surprise Wedding Breakfast room to kill the time.
Have you considered how you will entertain your guests while you’re away for your post-ceremony photoshoot? Share your ideas in the comments below.
Embracing the Great Scottish outdoors
If there’s one good thing that’s come out of lockdown– we’ve finally started appreciating the beautiful Scottish outdoors more!
Therefore, if your wedding is between May to September, I trust you will want parts of your wedding celebrations to take place outdoors!
I see a lot more couples asking for outdoor ceremonies, drinks reception outside, evening marshmallow toasting around fire pits – this is the vision, right?
Let’s not forget that if you’re planning for a wedding in Scotland, you will need to prepare for a contingency to this plan, but at the same you should absolutely embrace the outdoors wherever you can! There’s nothing more uplifting for the atmosphere than sunny outdoors!
If you’re worried about the weather for your wedding and how to prepare for a possible contingency, Chatbox message me today!
Anniversary Receptions
The reality of lockdown meant that many of the weddings restricted by lockdown will be celebrating their anniversaries BIG!
So don’t worry if you’ve missed out on a seat for the wedding day, you might be in for an even bigger treat with an anniversary reception!
As a couple, you might want to re-enact your big moment with an affirmation of the vows ceremony in the presence of all your guests to make it official to all those important to you!
Are you one of the couples who decided to celebrate twice? Give me Y for YES in the comment boxes below.
Drag Queen / Entertainment Acts
Since the reappearance of Drag Race UK on the BBC 3, I am more and more often being asked about Drag Acts for the entertainment part of the evening reception.
It’s all about offering those very unique, light-hearted and fun entertainment experiences that are being sought after nowadays!
Whether it’s a Drag Act, celebrity DJ appearance or even Red Hot Chilli Pipers shaking up your evening reception – those are the pieces that will make your evening reception memorable.
Are you looking for some show-stopping entertainment recommendations? Why not book a 15-minute discovery call with me to discuss how I could help you secure the right entertainer for your party?
Two-piece wedding dress
Hitched reports that two-piece wedding dress searches increased by 176% this year!
Imagine, if you got a two-piece wedding outfit, it can transform easily from a daytime look to a nighttime look – for instance, start the ceremony with a long fitted skirt train and changing this to cigarette trousers for your nighttime bonanza on the dancefloor.
Two outfits used to be popular, so this is a sustainable spin on this idea, and it’s been mostly reintroduced in the boho-style outfits.
Would you consider a two-piece dress for your special day? Give us Y for YES and N for NO in the comments below – let’s settle this debate in a friendly exchange!
Earthy or bold colours
I feel like in the past two years fashion has gone on a roller-coaster of truly vibrant developments.
In 2022, I see my couples either going for some earthy colours in their designs including dried flowers and pampas grass or a complete clash of rich and statement colours!
Remember clashing colours can make spectacular designs and clash here isn’t used to downgrade this design method – the colour game is so important in wedding planning.
If you haven’t watched my interview with colour-matching expert Tanya on YouTube, you should do so sooner rather than later and have fun with your colours!

Proudly Celebrating Love, By Tasha Monaghan Leung at Fuze Ceremonies
Proudly Celebrating Love, By Tasha Monaghan Leung at Fuze Ceremonies
A Lesbian, A Bisexual, and A Kickass Wedding
You know that feeling when you find someone who truly accepts you for who you, and you know that there is no one else you would rather spend the rest of your days with? Everything has fallen into place, and you can’t wait to plan your future together - it’s just magic isn’t it? Love is one of the most precious things you can experience and getting married should be one of the happiest times in your life.
However, when myself and my partner, Lauren, got engaged back in 2012, there was a slight snag…we weren’t legally allowed to get married… isn’t that wild?? So… we bought a lovely house in the meantime and patiently waited until Scotland legalised same-sex marriage in December 2014 (now part of the 31 countries in the world who do so today).
And the “fun” of wedding planning begins…
Fantastic news - time to plan the wedding! We were so excited to get started. Although we were officially recognised in the eyes of law, we soon realised that perhaps the wedding industry wasn’t quite ready for us… Going to a wedding show particularly sticks out in my mind. Lauren and I walked up to various suppliers, as you do, hand in hand, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.
“Who’s the lucky man?”, “Which one of you is the bride?”, “Oh, is this your bridesmaid?”, “Tell me about your hubby-to-be!”
GROAN!! We were literally holding hands, both engagement rings glittering in the light! All the signs were there, henny! What should have been an enjoyable experience left us utterly bummed out and frustrated. Having lived almost our entire lives as out and proud, it felt like we were being shoved back into the closet, forced to relive a hellish nightmare of coming out repeatedly, suddenly anxiety-ridden that we would be angrily rejected, a la homophobic American bakery. It was not an enjoyable day.
The most exciting part was about to truly begin
Luckily, we had some stand-out, amazing experiences to balance this out - seeing many, many live bands (a great excuse for a night out!), tasting delicious cakes, and making genuine friends with our photographers. We married in 2016, on the stunning grounds of Mar Hall – where we got engaged – and our wedding co-ordinator and the staff were more than happy to make our dreams come true. Our celebrant from Fuze Ceremonies listened carefully to our story and delivered a beautiful and touching ceremony. We proudly declared our love for each other, joined by our closest family and friends. As you can see, we were beaming with joy.
And the memories we will cherish for the rest of our lives
I can quite honestly say, it was the best day of my life, and if I could relive it, I would in a heartbeat! I would, however, say my vows first – I was so overcome with emotion after hearing Lauren’s vows, I ugly-cried two sentences into my own! Seriously, she had to calm me down. We laughed at how I’d set everyone else off too, ha ha. Our guests told us how much they loved our ceremony and how personal it was, some even said it was the best wedding they’d ever been to! (Apart from their own, of course!)

Why I Became a Wedding Celebrant
Eventually coming down from the high of the big day, I reflected on the entire experience. I wanted every betrothed couple to feel as amazing as me and Lauren felt on our wedding day… and I wanted absolutely no one to feel the way we did at that wedding show.
Now, I LOVE a wedding, and Mahatma Gandhi was swimming around in my head, whispering, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” What a wonderful thing to be able to do… what if I were to combine my freakish organisational skills, my creative flair and speaking skills (I worked in training at the time) with the ability to play a part in people’s most special day? How lovely to be a welcoming and understanding face for LGBT+ couples and help them proudly celebrate their love – to be exactly the kind of celebrant I would have loved to have.
A celebrant who truly understands LGBT+ community first-hand…
Now please don’t get me wrong, our celebrant was lovely and did a fantastic job. But Lauren and I would have loved the option of having a celebrant who knew first-hand what we were feeling and had personally walked down similar paths in life. I feel that it’s important to have a choice of celebrants that reflects the diversity of all the engaged couples out there.
Due to the trajectory of my career at the time, I put this idea on the backburner. But such is life, redundancy pulled it back into the spotlight, and this time it had my full attention. I trained with the UKCAPSA (UK Celebrant & Professional Skills Academy – an extension of Fuze Ceremonies) and got my SQA Qualification which gave me the skills and knowledge needed to create and deliver truly bespoke ceremonies.
I absolutely adore getting to know my couples’ love stories, and being able to retell them to their nearest and dearest is an absolute pleasure and an honour. It just brings be such joy to feel the love radiating around the room! Here’s Dani & James Jasper who were the very first couple I married in Clashnessie. There wasn’t a dry eye in the…beach!

How to Choose Your Celebrant
You wouldn’t necessarily book the first venue or wedding outfit you saw, so why would you do so with your celebrant? One of the great things about Fuze Ceremonies is that we have lots of celebrants to choose from, and we all have different personalities and something special to offer, so you’re bound to find the perfect one for your day.
It’s important that you find a celebrant who you get on with and is on the same wavelength as you – after all, they will play such a big part in your wedding day, they will be intertwined with your memories. Have a browse through celebrants’ bios and social media, which is a great way to see what they’re all about (these days it’s much easier to tell if they are LGBT+ friendly – phew!). Check if they are available on your wedding day, as celebrants get booked years in advance, so it’s best to check to avoid disappointment…it’s never too early too book!
Make a shortlist of celebrants you are interested in and contact each one to have a chat with them. They will be more than happy to explain what they can do for you and answer any of your questions. Think about who you would like to stand at the end of the aisle with you, and then secure your booking with them! Easy peasy 😊
Create a Ceremony That’s True to You
When you close your eyes and imagine your wedding day, what do you see? Maybe a deeply romantic and dramatic affair? Perhaps a pared-back, easy going day? Or even a loud, funny, lively celebration? The beauty of a Humanist Ceremony is that your celebrant works directly with you to achieve exactly the kind of ceremony you want.
There are no rules, apart from making your declaration and signing the marriage schedule – you can do whatever you want! You could live your forest fantasy and get married in the woods (think of the pictures!). You could have your furry (trustworthy) babies as ringbearers. You could even walk down the aisle to RuPaul’s ‘Sissy that Walk’ if you wanted to! The possibilities are endless. But if you don’t have a clear vision in your head, do not fret, as your celebrant will give you plenty of suggestions on how to make your ceremony meaningful and memorable, like symbolic gestures and readings, which can be a great way to involve the thespians in your guestlist.
Freedom from Tradition - Flexibility to Create Your Own Rules
One of the things I love about an LGBT+ wedding is that you can easily toss ‘traditions’ out the window and create your own rules! In fact, I think everyone should if they want to! For example, instead of defining your wedding party by gender, choosing only bridesmaids or groomsmen (and snubbing your favourite people in the process), why not have ‘mates of honour’? The only requirement is, they have to be awesome.
Who comes down the aisle? Well, both of you if you’d like! You could make separate entrances, accompanied by whoever is deemed worthy of the privilege, go it alone (why you all gagging so?) or you could walk in together, like the power couple you are.
Please do not feel like you have to do what people ‘expect’ you to do – this is YOUR wedding day, so don’t dim your shine to make anyone else feel comfortable (friendly advice - if anyone makes you feel like you should, maybe they shouldn’t attend!). Celebrate your love proudly, unapologetically, and make it a day to remember for all the right reasons. Relax, and enjoy every second of it.

WHEN SHOULD WE START OUR DAY?
Interestingly, I did cover your wedding day timeline recently in this blogpost - https://theweddingguruoskar.co.uk/wedding-planner/read-me-blog/planning-your-wedding-day-timeline
You should start your timeline from the end of the night and work your timings back.
Here is my quick formula on how to come up with a solution to this question:
Evening Entertainment – length of service? (you’d need to check with your entertainment supplier – on average 4 hours)
Would there be any comfort break after the meal? 30/60 minutes?
Speeches – if 3 x 10 minutes speeches, that’s 30 minutes
Wedding Breakfast – three course is 2 hours
Drinks Reception between 1h30mins to 2 hours (you’d need to check with your photographer)
Wedding Ceremony between 30 minutes to 45 minutes (you’d need to check with your celebrant, officiant or registrar)
Guest arrival from 30/60 minutes prior to ceremony time
Hair and makeup – will depend on the number of girls and the styling planned, an average 1h – 1h30mins per person
HOW DO I PICK A PHOTOGRAPHER?
There are a few ways to do this – you might have already received recommendations or met a photographer you like at another event. If not, do #hashtag search for your venue on Instagram and you’ll come across portfolio of photographers images of your venue.
It is always a good idea to book a call or a Zoom appointment to check on availability, rates and general feeling for your shortlist of photographers – you want to ensure that your photography looks great, but also that you and your guests will feel comfortable.
If you’re in any more doubt – check out recent reviews on Google and listing directories, you might even book an engagement photoshoot first.

HOW SHOULD I VET SUPPLIERS?
If you’re new to weddings and feeling a little lost when it comes to booking wedding suppliers – check out my Six Red Flags When Booking a Supplier blog that touches upon what to avoid and look at when booking your suppliers.
You ideally want to work only with reputable suppliers on your wedding day plans, so check out their Google listing and social media. Look out for the length of service, any reviews, comments and recognitions.
Wedding venues and planners will often refer tried and tested suppliers for you to approach and believe me those recommendations comes after years of working relationships, giving you additional warranties when booking.

HOW DO I PICK MY FLOWERS AND COLOURS?
This is an interesting question! If you’re asking it, you probably don’t have a set theme in mind or you’re looking for suggestions.
Now, if you’re Scottish you might want to check your family tartan colours first and see if they rock your boat… if that’s not the case, why don’t you look outside for what nature has in stock for you in the season of your wedding?
Seasonal flowers are not only perfectly matching to what you’ll observe outside on your wedding day, but they’ll also be a lot better value for money than trying to get peony roses in October 😊
Additionally, you might want to consider your venue colours and any favourite colours you like - the easiest way to identify what you like from the design is to create moodboards of style images. You’ll very quickly make most fitting choices that way?

WHEN TO SEND OUR INVITATIONS?
There are many schools of thought on this matter.
My recommendation is that you firstly send your save the date as soon as you’ve booked your venue and set the date!
Invitations that way can be sent in the last 6 to 3 months before the wedding and this is also when you’re most likely to attend your menu tasting. Many couples don’t want to have their tasting too close to the wedding, but there is in fact a reason why venues and caterers encourage you to have your tasting as close to the wedding as possible – you’ll have a fresh recollection of it, you’ll be able to try seasonally fresh ingredients and lastly, stock levels of fresh produce are very unlikely to change in the last three months before your wedding. You must also remember that a menu tasting isn’t so much for choosing your menu, it is rather to discuss your choices with the professional Chef in terms of quantity, flavours and presentation.
Finally, I recommend avoiding big gaps between sending invitations and their RSVP deadline – the more time you give your guests, the less likely they are to deal with it instantly.

HOW SOON SHOULD I BOOK MY FINAL WEDDING DRESS ALTERATIONS?
If you’re having your wedding dress bespoke made for you, your designer will schedule these appointments for you automatically, however, if you’re buying off-the-rack or online, you want to ensure you have your alternations booked in advance.
I am being told that alterations might take up to three appointments, first is the longest one, which could take up to an hour and should take place shortly after purchasing/receiving the dress.
Your fittings should normally be scheduled between 12 to 2 weeks before the wedding in incremental milestones.
Dress designers advise against buying too small dress for motivation – it’s easier to take a larger dress in than to let smaller one out.

WHAT’S THE LEGAL PAPERWORK TIMELINE IN SCOTLAND?
All wedding planning couples need to complete their notices forms and the most common form is called M10.
These notices cost £30 each and you need to submit one for each partner. There is a £10 cost for your marriage certificate, which you can request several duplicates of at £10 each – it’s good to take more then one copy as you might need to send these away to authorities if you’re changing your name following the marriage.
Marriage notices – otherwise known as M10 forms can only be lodged maximum 12 weeks before the wedding and no later than 29 days before the wedding.
Along with these forms, you will need send your birth certificates, any previous divorce decrees (if applicable), proof of address (bank statement or utility bills) and if you fall under immigration rules, you might need to supply proof of your immigration status. If you’re under the immigration rules – you’re best to submit your notices minimum 70 days before marriage.
If you’re looking for more hands-on support with completing your M10 form, book one of my one-off wedding planning consultations today.
HOW TO PICK BRIDESMAIDS DRESSES?
Many couples find this challenging as very rarely will your Bridesmaids/Groomsmaids will be of the same size and shape and have the same tastes.
You might have already heard of the multi-tie dress options – these are ideal if you want to ensure the same colour palette and dress flow, yet give your girls plenty of options for how they want to tie the upper section of the dress – these dresses are made of stretch material, so it’s ideal for a varied size and shape wedding party.
Alternatively, you can try jumpsuits – these are very trendy at the minute and will definitely not upstage the bridal dress, additionally they are very comfortable for dancing and moving about. Most of the time these come with pockets! Added Bonus!
Finally, if you want to give your Bridesmaids plenty of freedom, why not give them one pantone colour to work with so that they are colour matching and only cover what you were planning to spend on their outfits? That way they can do the shopping themselves within your guidelines – it’s a win – win this means less pressure on you and they’ll be happy to pick an outfit that best fits within their style.
Would you be willing to give your Bridesmaids the freedom to pick their own outfits matching your chosen colour and guidelines? Comment “Y” for Yes and “N” for No in the comment boxes below.
HOW TO BEST PLAN GUESTLIST?
If you’re finding this part of your wedding planning challenging – why not consider a couple of guest lists based on priority? If you decide to send your invites early, you might always have time to top up if your Top Priority guest’s respond with “No, I won’t be able to make it.”
If you’re already at the point of allocating your guests to tables, why not get creative? I get it – family politics might be challenging, but this can be fun, trust me!
Draw your tables on a large piece of paper – ideally flip chart size paper and bring stick on tabs - write your guests names on them. You’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll get through this and you can always move people about easily on this plan, if anything changes closer to the time, it’s just as easy as to peel the tab and place on another table – simple 😊

HOW TO BEST PLAN CATERING FOR THE MORNING OF?
This is so very important! Never underappreciate the importance of eating on the morning of your wedding – your Wedding Breakfast meal is unlikely to be served before dinner time and the last thing you want on your wedding day is to feel feint!
Good base breakfast makes a great start to a busy day!
You might not want to eat a lot such as a fry-up breakfast, but at least ensure you cover your morning catering with plenty of treats – continental buffet breakfast is ideal for that! Plenty fruit, pastries, hams, cheeses, yoghurts and cereals will ensure you’re not feeling bloated, yet you can nibble as the morning preparations get under way.
If you decide to opt in for a fry-up breakfast on the morning of your wedding - ideally you want to ensure this is first thing in the morning, so that you’re not feeling bloated and avoid this breakfast being made where you’re getting ready as the smells will penetrate the room and your outfits!
If you’re looking to book a light packed lunch, make sure it is delivered in plenty of time, so that you’re not eating last minute and already in your dress – you want to avoid any spillages before the ceremony and official photos.

SHOULD WE TAKE WEDDING INSURANCE?
I wish more couples asked me about this pre-Covid, yet statistics say that pre-Covid wedding insurance was rarely taken out, something many of you can’t even imagine starting to plan your wedding without.
As more and more insurers are starting to offer wedding insurance covers and policies, you shouldn’t underestimate this additional protection and not only for the pandemic, but for anything you contract for your wedding! Considering that some covers start from as little as £50.00 it is likely to be the smallest value items on your wedding budget, yet it can save you an awful lot of headache further down the line!
If you cannot take wedding insurance instantly, ensure you remain protected at all times and pay using credit card for additional protection.

ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WEDDING MUST HAVE’S?
Following nearly two years of lockdown entertainment unique catering should be at the top of your priority list!
Your guests are longing for a good party and therefore if you’re going to be away for long periods of time ie. your photography, or changeovers or even transportation between venues – ensure this isn’t yet another dreaded hanging about time with nothing to do! You want to ensure that those gaps are filled in with creative and fun guest activities such games, magicians, live act music, quizzes, showstopping selfie opportunities, etc.
Catering is yet another important element of the wedding – unique catering options, full of variety is what your guests will remember and this doesn’t necessarily need to apply to your main meal, but maybe consider something different for your evening snack, that isn’t just another bacon roll display.
Being creative with the drinks will also set the tone for the day – pimp your prosecco is very cool, personalised cocktails and mocktails and theming of the bars can really make a difference to your guests experience and therefore memories.

BOHO-INSPIRED SAME-SEX EDINBURGH ELOPEMENT
You might have already noticed that Gerlof from Geebz Photography and I love to stir some photoshoot excitement every now and then, therefore it is with great pleasure that I would like to present to you the extraordinary work of all those involved while celebrating #pridemonth #loveislove #lgbtq
We all decided that while we’re waiting for the big and exciting changes to happen, we could get creative and that creativity once again lead us to produce something magnificent, but I’ll leave this for you to judge 😊
Another motivation for us was the success of our Autumnal Photoshoot in November 2020 and we simply knew there was so much more we could do, therefore in this blog I will present to you our spin on a spring boho style city elopement in some of the most picturesque locations of our glorious capital city of Edinburgh, so allow me to take you on a journey in the next few paragraphs…
HAIR AND MAKEUP
For hair and makeup, we were inspired by natural makeup and free flowing locks. It was very important for us to ensure that hair and makeup wasn’t too busy, too heavy and too arranged – our aim was to achieve a very natural look for an outdoor wedding. I think that the team behind Bryony Quate Hair and Beauty Couture managed to pull of this inspiration so perfectly, don’t you think?
Bryony jumped on board with us as soon as I said that we were working on a bridal photoshoot and I wouldn’t expect anything less from this top-class team!
What stuns me about working with Bryony and her team is how they manage to create an atmosphere of celebration at the point of morning hair and makeup – Bryony’s team is young, fun and vibrant and immediately uplifts the atmosphere in the room and deflects the nerves among the Bridal Party!
Did you know that Bryony’s team also do beautiful hairpieces for your special day? Give them a follow to find out more!
OUTFITS
Mette from Freja Designer Dressmaking is absolutely outstanding – not only did she supply us with those two beautifully complementing looks, she actually made them from scratch for this photoshoot, now that’s dedication!
Mette – the designer says: “I was delighted to be invited to take part in this photoshoot with this amazing line up of suppliers. I was told it would be a same sex wedding, taking all the good from micro and outdoor weddings and in a beautiful setting. I wanted the brides to wear something which was modern and easy to wear on the hill, but which had some elements of traditional bridal wear and feminine details. The dress was made of beautiful guipure lace, it was soft and contemporary, the skin showing through the lace. I felt the sequins would add a little bit of sparkle in the sun, without looking garish. The trouser suit, had the traditional corset style top and illusion neckline with lace motifs on the skin and drapes on the back, again similar to a veil but in a new and contemporary way. I am so pleased with the photographs and felt it all came together to the same vision"
In the initial conversations with Mette, I only suggested that we wanted two distinct, yet complimenting looks for this same-sex elopement photoshoot. We didn’t want long trains as majority of the photoshoot was planned for the outdoors and I suggested a tea-length dress and a jumpsuit, Mette just jumped at this idea with excitement and run with it. Don’t you think she’s exceeded the brief? Make sure you follow Freja Designer Dressmaking today!
VENUE
The dream was to have the entire photoshoot at the Edinburgh’s iconic Arthur Seat, which we had the pleasure of featuring on the day! Having been in this wonderful and creative industry for many years now, I knew we couldn’t bank on the weather (especially this year!), so I ensured to work with one of my highly recommended wedding venues to have another unique backdrop to our photoshoot!
Therefore, we started our day at the SkyBar of the Doubletree by Hilton Edinburgh City Centre and featured our ceremony and drinks reception shoot against the absolutely breathtaking and uninterrupted backdrop of the Edinburgh Castle. If you haven’t been to the SkyBar before, you should definitely check it out, they regularly host ticketed and bar events there mid-week to experience this unique location.
We then proceeded to climb Arthur Seat… well… not exactly, we settled on St Margaret’s Loch and the beautiful hill there overseeing the Auld Reekie! This is where the weather cleared, and we got to enjoy true Scottish spring and the iconic city views in the distance. The scene was romantic and simply perfect for a city elopement wedding!
Would you like to find out more about the fabulous team behind this photoshoot? Make sure you follow all suppliers involved today!
STYLING
For this photoshoot we were inspired by moody, yet rich and vibrant colours of our Scottish spring! We focused on two scenes, indoor ceremony and outdoor romantic city view picnic scene.
Lynsay Borthwick Weddings and Events once again exceeded our expectations – we’ve asked Lynsay to create the perfect frame for our ceremony view encompassing the views of the Edinburgh Castle. She produced this trendy ivy and rose drooping copper frame for us along with cylinder vases filled with pillar candles.
On the hill by Arthur Seat, she set the scene perfectly with your dreamy picnic scene complimented by seasonal moss, floral accents, carved out wood trunks and earthy finishing touches.
Massive thanks also go to Dawn Stafford from Your Scottish Wedding who stepped in to help us with the setup on the day of our photoshoot – we couldn’t have done it without you!
Do you think the theme introduced by Lynsay fits with the landscape? Make sure you follow Lynsay on Instagram for many more of these gorgeous treats!
FLORISTRY
Once again, we had the pleasure of working with the best of the best in the wedding industry and Kathrin from White House Flowers hasn’t disappointed! Planning for this photoshoot we wanted something different, rich and lively, yet natural looking for our boho idea.
We’ve asked Kathrin to create two similar, yet slightly varied looks for the bouquets and headpieces, in order to give off a slight bohemian vibe.
Kathrin says: “When Oskar approached me to be involved in a photoshoot that celebrated the love of same sex couples , I jumped at the chance. Creating 2 flowers crowns that were the same - but different, was something I was really interested in doing. Providing complimentary bouquets that were individual but also cohesive, one with pops of spring coral - the other more classic, was also fun. I guess I saw it as a marriage of flowers too. I loved working with this team of professionals again. It makes my job as a wedding florist just brilliant.”

PHOTOGRAPHY
Now, let’s focus on the fabulous duo who captured the amazing work of all suppliers involved in this photoshoot!
We had the pleasure not only to be guided by Gerlof from Geebz Photography and Beate from BBPicture Photography on the day, but we’ve also been greatly entertained by them both – you wouldn’t expect anything else though! This is why these two don’t just make your wedding photography a tick box task on your special day – they make it a very special and fun event in itself and create special memories to cherish! All of us involved in this photoshoot can assure you of that!
They also don’t only work magic together, but they create some incredibly inspiring and distinct looks – don’t you think? Now, if you haven’t followed these guys on social media yet, you must do so!
VIDEOGRAPHY
We didn’t only settle on photography – this time we decided to involve a videographer to show behind the scenes footage of this truly beautiful elopement wedding photoshoot in one of the most picturesque locations!
You might not know this, but Daniel from Fern Photography is venturing out with a new string to his bow – videography!
It was amazing getting Daniel involved in our photoshoot and the scenes, views and settings he’s captured for us in his short trailer video showcase the beauty of all of our work! I am excited to learn more about the new videography element from Fern Photography and if you haven’t followed Daniel and Matt on their social media channels yet, you must do so now!

The wonderful team at ScotlandShop came to the rescue when we realised that Spring this year is very much unlike anything we’ve seen in the past few years!
Anna, Susan and Monja couldn’t have been more helpful – when I approached them about getting involved with the photoshoot, they invited me to their shop in Queensferry Street where they presented me with a vast variety of choices to keep our Brides warm on the photoshoot day!
